About The Demoiselles

The Demoisellessm was created to locate, identify and destroy impossible beauty standards.  Challenging those standards encompasses much more than finding great clothes and having a positive body image: it requires a new perception of fashion, of self, of gender and health.  It requires a new perception of the world around us.

Our goal is to teach young people how to be present again.

Fashion is not synonymous with “vapid” and thin is not synonymous with “sexy.”  (For the record, neither is “curvy.”)  Nothing about you, as an individual, has to fall in line with what society, or the media, tells you is normal.

It’s time that each of us takes hold of our lives and passions, fearlessly, and becomes proud of our bodies, minds and spirits.

The Demoiselles: advocates of pride, strength, knowledge and beauty – inside and out.

Lindsay is a mish-mash of every interest she’s ever had, and it’s reflected in her wealth of knowledge on the history of fashion, beauty and design culture. Whether current, vintage or antiqued, Lindsay can tell you what styles represented an era, and what social and political issues affected them. Add her keen research skills and an insatiable desire to oust the media’s common perceptions of beauty, and you have the essence of a true Demoiselle.

Her articles feature everything from breaking news in body image and fashion, to exposes of harmful advertising campaigns, to real-life findings in the checkout stands, news media and interviews with body-positive celebrities.

“The hardest mind to change is that of a 20-year-old girl who hates herself.”

-Lindsay

Jennifer Nicole is a roving activist.  You can find her debating the Green Movement at the office, talking Body Acceptance at a local coffee shop, and scouring the news for civil rights movements, anti-government protests and examples of human compassion. Jennifer is a fledgling ethicist, and The Demoiselles is her favorite stomping ground.

Look to Jennifer for insights on the history of beauty ads and prejudiced marketing tactics, as well as positive body image prose and frank discussion about everything from gender labels to labioplasty.

“Forget about what makes sense. Our bodies, our politics, our blogs and ideas are all getting press because they don’t make sense yet – because they’re uncharted territory.

Let’s keep surprising our elders.  Let’s start a revolution.”

-Jennifer Nicole
