We’re all aware of Gilt.com’s existence, and it’s only the digital version of a pile of designer clothes on the floor (don’t get us wrong, we love piles of clothes on any floor). So, imagine if instead of a pile on the floor, they were neatly hung on hangers, and organized by what fits your body?
Well, then you’d have 365Hangers.
From their “About Us” section:
We don’t have perfect bodies but that shouldn’t stop us from creating an illusion of having an almost perfect body. This could be done by choosing clothes that can create that image of perfection for your body shape. Hence, selecting clothes for your unique body shape is the key to creating that “WOW” look.
“We don’t have perfect bodies but that shouldn’t stop us from creating an illusion of having an almost perfect body.” I love and hate this line. “We don’t have perfect bodies, but that shouldn’t stop us.” This is where that paragraph should have ended. Creating an “illusion of a perfect body” is, in my opinion, furthering a negative body image, and fueling a comparison between the idea of a “perfect body” and encouraging women to lust, yearn, and reach for it. Not good, and actually making things worse.
They have five body types listed on their site: hourglass, pear, straight, full, and petite. Each type is represented by a [gorgeous] woman, with an accompanying body-positive description and “rules” for the shape.
Allegedly, they have a new item of clothing, or an outfit, every day for each body type. So far, I’ve only seen two different suggestions for each body type, and I’ve been watching the site for a couple weeks now… Maybe they’re just getting situated, or something? Either way, I hope to see a more regular rotation.
So, we know the idea is excellent, but what about the clothes?! That’s obviously the most important part, right? Well, let’s see.
For the hourglass figure (that’s me!), they’ve suggested these garments:

The skirt is by Helmut Lang (one of my favorites!) and on sale for $68, which is an excellent buy considering the retail price for the skirt is $230! The top is from Rebecca Taylor (also a favorite) and is priced at $72 (from $245 retail). Wow! Unfortunately, your hourglass figure must be a size 2, 4, or 6 to purchase any of it.
For the full figure (also me!), they have some gorgeous suggestions. This is an important category because, well, full figured women who are into fashion at all are often frustrated at the sizing/fit portion of their clothes because, well, we’re a little larger than most fashionistas!

Gorgeous, right? The dress is by DKNY, which is no surprise. Donna Karan is always looking to make women feel beautiful – at any size. I lust for DKNY pieces because their size range is a lot larger than most other designer lines, but the clothes are still beautiful (and the quality is still high). This dress is selling for $97, as opposed to the $345 retail price tag.
Fortunately, I was able to snag pictures of the clothes they were offering the “full figured” woman from the first time I saw the site.

Now, I absolutely adore this dress, and I’m tickled to see that they’re suggesting shorter dresses for full-figured women – something the rest of the “plus sized” industry doesn’t seem to understand. We don’t want to be hidden!
The only qualm I have with this site… is the sizing. For the full-figured outfit on sale today, the sizes left are 4, 6, and 8. Now, I’m not trying to be rude, but have you seen many full figured women who are as size 4? I’m sure they exist, but for a site that boasts “buy for your body type” – this isn’t exactly what I expected. Also, because I know the DKNY line goes up to at least a size 16, the only explanations are a) they sold out of the larger sizes (would make sense if full-figured women were buying them up!), or b) they just didn’t have any – which would be unacceptable.
While 365Hangers has excellent intentions (and an excellent future outlook, as predicted by me), they still have a lot of work to do in the realm of consistency and relevancy. It must be noted, though, that all of these complaints are coming from a full-figured, almost plus-sized, hourglass figured woman who knows way too much (and probably cares way too much) about clothing.
Pear shaped, straight figured, and petite women – this site (as it is right now) is for you. There is so much good about this idea and concept – I just hope that they can work on their size availability, then it will truly be perfect!

What a missed opportunity. Seriously, this is a FANTASTIC concept but it’s clearly been very poorly executed. Hopefully they’ll wise up and increase size availability as the business picks up speed.
And maybe alter some of that introductory language. You’re so right, Elle … that message is trying to do one thing, but risks doing the opposite.

It really has potential, but as it is sill in beta form I doubt we can see it up to form until the official release. I have my fingers crossed that it will be as good as it could be!

Nice article too bad they aren’t taking your advice the lack in sizes is because they lack in inventory and don’t want to spend any cash at all too bad it’s a good idea but in the hands a
of the wrong people.

Elle, thanks so much for a nice write-up on 365 Hangers.
Yes, we’re aware of the lack of sizes but that also allows us to bring some unique pieces for your wardrobe. Our idea is not to mass sell but to offer looks that are as unique as our followers.
Keep tuned for exciting things from 365hangers.com
