Accentuate the Positive

accentuate-the-positive

We know it’s out there – your favorite part of you.  It’s the part of you that always looks excellent, no matter what frock you’re trying on.  It’s that feature you play up; it’s what you accentuate when you’re feeling sexy.  We want to know: How do you accentuate your favorite features!?

We don’t think anyone should have to stress about their “unwanted” features; instead, we encourage you to overlook that dreaded area and, instead, focus on playing up your favorite parts.  It’s a great way to boost your confidence, so you know you’ll feel sexy, all day, no matter what.  To show you what we mean, we’ve each picked one of our own favorite body parts and used some of our own styling tricks to accentuate it, while explaining how and why our tricks work for us.

bio-pic-elleMy legs have gone through some pretty harsh times, as a part of my body. My life has been spent focusing on my mid-section, my boobs, and my face. When I was about 12, my mom told me I was “high-waisted”, and thusly had really long legs. I never truly noticed until a couple years ago, when I started wearing clothes that fit my shape. Now, I can honestly say that I really love the length of my legs, even if they’re a little thicker from a collective 20+ years of sports.

I was stuffing myself into sausage-casing-style jeans until I was about 21, which is when I discovered the miracle of wide-leg pants. Oh, finally something that will flatter my legs. The wide leg on the pants matches the widest part of my legs, which is my upper thighs. Because the fabric hangs straight down from there, I get movement and length when I walk. Perfect!

I feel the best when I’m comfortable, polished, and a little, tiny bit intimidating. In pinstripe pants, a Japanese cotton Dozume top from Jeffrey Sebelia/Cosa Nostra, and my favorite green satin Via Spiga slingbacks… I’m all of the above!

bio-pic-birdiee On me, thin is in.  I’m tiny and I’m into it.  To accentuate my petite figure, I wear a-line skirts like the one in the photo below (Deco Modiste) and fitted tops (Banana Republic).  I don’t shy away from horizontal stripes (and that sweater IS one of my favorites) – in fact, the horizontal stripes really exhibit the curves I do have, while letting me maintain my slim figure.  In this outfit I’ve used those stripes to accentuate not only my small waist, but also my curvy bust!

As scary as it is to admit it (don’t break out the pitchforks!) I feel good about being thin. For me, it’s a natural state of being, and as long as a thin girl is a healthy girl, she should be able to show it off, right?

bio-pic-jen As much as I whine about how hard it can be to find clothing that fits my short, curvy body, my favorite feature is my hourglass shape.  In a society that tells us we need to be boyish and thin, sometimes it’s nice to belt my natural waist, toss on a low-cut shirt and walk with some feminine swagger.

The fool-proof way to accentuate my waist is to grab a belted jacket – and there are tons out there in every fabric, style and sleeve length – and layer it over some form-fitting basics.  I chose a super cheap, short-sleeved option from Papaya and layered it over a contrasting beater tank from organic designer SPUN, which showed off the width of my hips compared to my natural waist.  Add a pair of well-fitted jeans (mine are Calvin Klein) and a playful heel (Nine West) and bam!  I’ve never looked more curvy.

  • Holy crud are you guys all hot! I love this post. :)

The picture linked above is cool-cat me… in shorts. Short-shorts, even. I have to admit that this is the first season of my life that I’ve ever worn shorts loud and proud — the first time I’ve ever actively searched them out to add to my wardrobe.

Let’s just say that my thighs aren’t my favorite part of my body. But you know what? I’ve kind of gotten over that, at least enough to say, “So what, jiggly thighs, you can’t stop me!”

The right pair of shorts highlight my hips and butt, two things I really love about my body. They also accentuate the length of my legs (I’m 5’8″ so no stubs here) as well as my awesome, toned calves. Yep, calves are a weird part of the body to be someone’s favorite, but I love ‘em just the same. In this picture I’m wearing flats, but I’ve recently embraced heels & my inner giant to better show off my legs (even though they stretch me to just under 6′)!

This is a cas’ Gap find — both the shirt & shorts are Gap. (And can I point out the stripes in the shirt do a little somethin’ somethin’ for my modest bust!)

Shades thrifted, pearl bracelet from Forever XXI, & shoes (which you can’t really see) from a little shop in Florence, Italy.

  • I’m 5’1 but wear “tall” size jeans, my legs are definitely my favourite feature, and the summer is my favourite time of year because I can wear tiny short skirts without freezing!

  • Great post! My favourite part of myself is my hair. Its naturally really curly (which I hated growing up, but love now). I can spend ages on my outfit and make up, but next to no time on my hair to make it look good.
