We all know that promotional photos are meant to entice us, but this latest one for Dollhouse has the opposite effect on me. It even inspired the latest edition of Article Outrage.
Sorry about the video – Jen doesn’t really look like that when she talks. Swear. -Elle

Twitter Trackbacks for Article Outrage: Eliza Dushku Doesn’t Need Photoshop | The Demoiselles [thedemoiselles.com] on Topsy.com added these pithy words on Sep 01 09 at 12:16 pmWhile I agree that most women don’t need as much photoshopping as they’re given, I don’t think this is nearly as bad a case as some out right now.
Her skin glows a bit, and I think her boobs look a little perky under the tank top (which is obv. not a boob flattering shirt based on other pictures), but otherwise, I don’t think the photoshopping is … detrimental to her. It’s not shedding off 10 pounds, or changing the way she looks.
I think the whole thing has a bit of extra psping in order to give it this artificial appearance…which is kind of the mission behind dollhouse.

Yep, you’re overanalyzing it. This wasn’t photoshopped to shave weight or blemishes, to somehow make her look “better”. I’m the first to cry foul when magazines photoshop Eliza into plasticity, but that’s not what this is.
The promo goes with the theme of “dolls” in the Dollhouse. You’ll notice the background is also bleeding through her image. She’s locked outside the window.
So the posterized, plasticized look here is doing just that. She’s a doll, made into a plaything, does she really exist anymore? Is there anything of her left? Is she struggling somewhere, somehow, to get back to herself?
That’s the theme of this promo pic, and I think it’s wonderful. I’m against photoshopping for the purpose of making someone “more pretty”, but this just isn’t it. We should be careful not to lump deliberately stylized artwork which illustrates a theme into the same batch as Maxim and company who think all women should look like Barbie.

I don’t have a problem with the plasticised look. In fact I don’t ALWAYS have a problem with photoshopping at all. For promotional images the removal of some minor blemishes in photoshop just saves make up artists hours of work. When I do have a problem is when photoshopping is used to create unrealistic and unobtainable images. removing bones and lengthening legs and slimming down models unrealistically.
This particular image I am unsure about. I can see it’s been “cartoonised” but I think she has also been slimmed down a fair bit and her body shape made more “delicate” when Eliza Dushku has quite an athletic figure. Whilst I understand the “cartoony” idea I think that changing her body type does carry with it an implication about which body types are most desirable.
I’ve seen worse certainly though!

Already, a debate! What do you think? Is this promo pic for @ElizaDushku too photoshopped? http://bit.ly/rJ5A5 (Posted @TheDemoiselles)

i think it might be the angle, but i do hate when they photoshop pics of people who either don’t need it or want it.

I completely agree with you, Retro Chick. While I can see that the image was supposed to be plasticized or “doll-like,” the changes they made to Eliza’s body – not the look of the image itself – seem extreme to me. Her figure has been lengthened, including her thumbs(!), and her upper body really does seem disproportionate to her lower body.
It’s nowhere near the limit of Photoshop – I’ve seen worse – but it IS pretty bad. If I didn’t know any better, I’d guess that this image was manipulated by an amateur…and poorly manipulated at that.
