We chose Eyeliah of Style Symmetry for our third Birds of a Feather interview subject not only because of her beauty and style aptitude, but also because of her aid in rallying women for our no-makeup project on Flickr. We’re going to change this Birds of a Feather intro up just a little, because we both admire Eyeliah, and want to share why.

Elle says… She has shown a strong, powerful support of The Demoiselles, as well as strong sense of strength and class, since TD’s inception. Eyeliah has made it known that she believes in our mission and is looking out for the happiness and greater good of women.

We sort of love that.

Jen says…We also love that she goes her own way when it comes to fashion.  Her choices are inspiring, and as we were grabbing pictures for this interview we kept commenting on an outfit here, a color palette there.  It’s just another symbol of her freedom as a woman: Eyeliah is a perfect example of an empowered, feminine woman who chooses to go her own way while empowering others to do the same.

The Demoiselles: You seem tall in your photos. How tall are you?

Eyeliah: Oh thank you, I am average height at 5 foot 6.

TD: How does your height affect your fashion choices?

E: I feel quite lucky actually with my height.  Just tall enough to wear skirts of any length and most varieties of pants; capris, wide legs, skinny, flared.  It’s my width that affect my fashion choices, with bigger hips I tend to wear tighter fitting tops with looser bottoms, a line skirts with defined waists and no mini skirts or super skinny jeans!

TD: Your outfits are so individual and cover a wide range of style… How do you describe your personal style?

E: Awww thanks.  My office wear I would name Sweet Secretary/What Can I Get Away With.  After hours is basically the same with more cleavage.  I’d love to inject a more bohemian 70s vibe into my style when I approach 30 years old, I’ve been buying some pieces already and trying them out.

TD: What’s your favorite part of your body? What do you love to accentuate?

E: Lately it’s been my collarbone and shoulders, I’d love to get some more off shoulder and sleeveless tops.  I also accentuate the waist often with vintage belts or empire waists.

TD: Who do you look to for fashion inspiration?

E: Bloggers like Keiko Lynn, Agathe’s archives, The Clothes Horse and What Katie Wore to name a few and the stylish girls of Wardrobe Remix continuously blow my mind.  I also get inspiration from the breathtaking nature in Vancouver BC, my memories of what I thought was beautiful as a child and 50s diners.

TD: Speaking of amazing women, when you’re bombarded by images of standardized beauty in the media, how do you bring yourself back to earth and stay positive?

E: I suppose I don’t spend too much time on the mass media anymore.  As a teenager I was always reading magazines, watching television and music videos which consistently negatively affected my already low self esteem.  It was a gradual process to get to a positive state of mind, I started eating healthfully at 20, then got active and physically fit and started taking even more pride in my personal appearance.  These are the three keys for me to have confidence.  I like reality and real women which is why I find inspiration from the sources above and rarely from models and celebrities.

TD: That’s the kind of inspiration we can get behind.  Thank you, Eyeliah, for your time and insight.  Readers: check out Eyeliah’s site, Style Symmetry, here.
