Sometimes, we just don’t care about our figures.

You heard us right: sometimes we don’t care that we’re hourglass figures.  Sometimes we feel like straight up and down girls, or pear-shaped, or apples.  Occasionally, we may even want to look…triangular.

Because that’s what clothes are supposed to do, right?

A good article of clothing not only accentuates your form, but also your mood.  Style isn’t defined by how you dress yourself within the limits of your body, but also how you stretch those limits, and take your clothing to more interesting depths.

Lately, we’ve been saying Yes! to a lot of our body type’s “no’s.”

bio-pic-jenJennifer Nicole: When Market Clothing offered their first 100 Twitter followers a free t-shirt, I hemmed and hawed over which one to get.  Feeling daring, I settled on the Milla, or “boyfriend” tee: it was baggy, not form-fitting…and totally different from my usual style.  I’ve got this high, tiny waist – I need to show it off, right?  Otherwise I’d look…bigger than I am. (And society has taught me to dread that possibility.)

When the t-shirt came I immediately tore open the package and tossed it on.  “Honey, is this too big?” I asked my always honest, ever tactless boyfriend.  “A little, but it’s wearable.”  Wearable?  Well, then I’m going to do what I do with every new item of clothing: wear it immediately, and until I absolutely have to wash it. (I get excited easily.)

I decided to go really daring and wear it with the antithesis of waist definition: low rise, semi-baggy skinny jeans.

threeshot

See my waist? Neither do I. It’s hidden beneath the (incredibly soft and comfortable) t-shirt.  I wore this outfit for an entire day – to a meeting, to coffee, to take the dog out to pee – and it felt amazing.

What was I expecting?  For people to point and stare because my waist wasn’t defined?  That someone I knew would think me unfashionable or ask if I gained weight?  Maybe.  But here’s the truth of it: I noticed just as many stares – those envious ones from girls and the predatory ones from guys – as I always do.  Only this time, I imagine that at least some of those stares had to do with how confident I was in a baggy t-shirt and jeans, instead of how big my butt is compared to my waist.

bio-pic-elleMiss Elle: My favorite departure from “fitted & flattering” is much the same as Jennifer’s. As much as I love a good waist-cinching, and some serious leg-lengthening… Sometimes, I just don’t wanna. Yeah, and guess what? That’s okay.

There are way, way, way too many styles of clothing out there for me to box myself in the “I need a waist and shapely curves” department. Loving clothing is about experiencing clothing, for me. So when Jennifer Nicole brought up this idea, I knew exactly what I wanted to do.

My go-to outfit is simple: straight leg jeans, a loose top tucked into the front of said jeans, and some high heels. Ta-da, I’m dressed. Unfortunately for my body type… this outfit does nothing for it. I mean, I think I look fine – my legs look really nice – but my upper half (where all the *ahem* attention is usually directed…) is just a completely billowy blur.

tryptich-anti-body-type-elle

The middle pictures shows exactly how loose this top is. The gigantic sleeves in combination with the general oversized-ness is, to me, tempered by the narrowness of the jeans. Plus, the addition of 3.5″ platform boots helps any shapelessness the top is contributing to. Tucking the shirt into the jeans in the front allows for some shape, but certainly not any “body conscious” shape.

Which I am completely okay with. The idea that women constantly need to “dress for their body type” is stifling when it comes to fashion. Does that mean a full figured woman can never wear a minidress? A skinny girl can’t wear a column gown? A pear girl can’t wear skinny jeans? C’mon.

What fun would that be?

How do you deviate from what you’re “supposed” to wear?

I just wear it, and if someone makes a comment on how flat my butt is, I just smile and look at theirs.

KIDDING KIDDING!!!

Okay. Really though, I just like wearing what I like to wear and that’s it.

Not really that keen or adventurous to try on harem pants any time soon.

I unfailingly dress for my body type, but that’s only because I feel the best when i look my slimmest and most shapely. I just don’t feel confident in clothes that aren’t perfectly flattering to my figure! The only thing I deviate on is colour. Browns are some of my worst colours, yet I wear them close to my face sometimes. But I do feel much better in colours that suit me.

i’ve been thinking about this a lot lately.

i love long, baggy plaid tops, long, floppy cardigans – and i’m scared of pants. usually i wear a legging, but i’m scared of my (wide) ass hanging out. i’m petite hourglass, but there’s noting petite about my breasts, hips, and thighs…i “should” be cinching my waist, wearing bootcut, in heels, and baring the shoulders.

and lately i’m very f-this. i’m not perfect at it, but i’m trying. just bought a pair of chocolate floppy linen (linen!) pants to go with my several too-big plaid tops, and a long, too-big sweater vest to boot. i’ve also purchased flats. at 4’11″ this is a feat since i’ve always equated “short” with “squat.”

long story short: i’m forcing myself not to care. i’m not at an ideal weight and it’s because i’ve been stress-eating and lack exercise. but until then, i’m not holding off on styles i love, because i’m just tired of hating my figure (and skin, and under eye bags, etc.) props to you both (i still don’t think i’m ready for a t-shirt and jeans).

i love this blog and look forward to your posts. as someone who has had life-long body issues and has dealt with bullying, etc. for no damned reason (i’m a pretty girl!) i’m finally buying that skin-tight pencil skirt to go under flowing tops. serious.

I have big boobs and mostly people say not to wear high necks. I’m wearing a crew-necked t-shirt right now, and I wore a turtle neck yesterday.

I’m happy to show them off, but I think I look just as good with them covered. Thanks for such a thoughtful post.

great article – though sometimes my boyfriend will say “eh, I prefer it when you show off your body” (for the life of me, I can’t understand why), I’ve always been drawn to wear shapeless dresses. I guess because in my mind people can only “guess” at how skinny I am…they can’t really tell. Of course they could think I am am fatter than I am (and they would be right) but there is always the chance they will think I am slimmer too.

Yah, yah, you shouldn’t care what other people think. But I do – we do – and somedays I would rather there be a mystery about my shape…if I have it all out there, then people will know off the bat I’m quite lacking in the “slim” department!

Also, because I have ample hips, thighs and butts I am always told to avoid the skinny jean look and to just cover everything up below with something A-line. Sometimes I rebel by wearing skinny jeans – which us bigger girls are always told are a no-no. Meh, I might not look as good as the stick thin pins out there but sometimes I don’t think I look as bad as everyone else wants me to believe…

Emily Jane Reply:

I have the same issue – ample bum and thighs and a small top half; so the A-line is the best idea ever. For skirts it’s great, and a flared jean instead of a skinny straight-leg – makes me look way more proportionate! :)
