…according to Esquire.
I’m always iffy on whether or not to subscribe to these “Best Looking…”, “Sexiest Woman…”, “Hottest Whatever” polls done by men’s magazines because it seems to not-so-subtly inspire women to constantly compare themselves to other women. But this… This feels different. Why? Because, for the first time in years, a men’s magazine has selected a woman that doesn’t fit the typical shape, size, or appearance of what is pushed on us as “hot.”

You know Christina Hendricks from our modicum of posts about her luscious curves, and her unabashed flaunting of them. You know her from Mad Men, where she isn’t displayed as the homely office gopher (a la Ugly Betty), but instead the ravishing, sexually empowered Joan Holloway, whose tight skirts and sweaters make men (and women) everywhere quiver.

The article presented by Esquire, written by Christina Hendricks herself, was beautifully honest. It speaks of perceptions, recollections, and impressions that result from the interactions between men & women and how she feels about them — how we feel about them.
Here is an excerpt that struck both Jennifer Nicole and me:
We love your body. If we’re in love with you, we love your body. Your potbelly, everything. Even if you’re insecure about something, we love your body. You feel like you’re not this or that? We love your body. We embrace everything. Because it’s you.
We remember forever what you say about the bodies of other women. When you mention in passing that a certain woman is attractive — could be someone in the office, a woman on the street, a celebrity, any woman in the world, really — your comment goes into a steel box and it stays there forever. We will file the comment under “Women He Finds Attractive.” It’s not about whether or not we approve of the comment. It’s about learning what you think is sexy and how we might be able to convey it. It’s about keeping our man by knowing what he likes.
We also remember everything you say about our bodies, be it good or bad. Doesn’t matter if it’s a compliment. Could be just a comment. Those things you say are stored away in the steel box, and we remember these things verbatim. We remember what you were wearing and the street corner you were standing on when you said it.
No, it’s not particularly independent, and yes, it shows that women do care about their appearance — but we wouldn’t be a fashion blog if we negated that theory, would we?

Were I a more forward woman, I might print this out and hand it nonchalantly to every victim of dating that I entrap. There are things about a woman that should never go unnoticed, and Christina Hendricks addresses all of them. It’s not about being enslaved to men, it’s not about doing things for them… It’s about being treated like you want to be treated and, damnit, Christina Hendricks will have what she wants.
…and that’s why we love her.
