Naked.

How long has it been since you’ve spent any time naked?

I’m not talking out-of-the-shower-and-into-a-towel naked, or changing-clothes naked.  I’m talking about being purposefully naked.

If it’s been a while – more than a month – I suggest you try it.  Close the curtains, shut the blinds, and hang towels over your mirrors if you need to.  Try spending one hour of one day just being…you. You’d be surprised at how good it feels.

I took the early hours of Sunday morning, post-shower, as a good time to be completely in the buff.  I ignored any potential outfits; I left my hair wet and slicked back; the makeup stayed in the bathroom drawer.  My only accessories were my widening hips and bare feet, slapping against the fir floor.

I started to notice those hips, too: how they swayed with each step, how my lower back muscles slid left and right.  I also noticed that with each step, I bounce a little more than I used to.  Where my body used to glide about like a well-oiled machine, it now splashes and shudders like a pool of water.

My body had changed in the past few months and, until that moment, I hadn’t even noticed.  What a nice surprise!

I didn’t need to look in a mirror – all that visual stuff would just remind me of the supposed perfection we’re supposed to obtain to look like the magazines – or even spend a lot of time paying close attention to myself.  I could go about my morning just feeling my body, without sacrificing my multigrain waffle breakfast, coffee and emails.

And it wasn’t the least bit scary.  Instead, it was completely freeing, and almost primal: a perfect way to start the day as a strong, capable, sexual woman.

  1. Now that we don’t have an extra person living in the house, I am far more inclined to walking around naked, particularly during the day when I’m alone. Come to think of it, the only reason I’m NOT naked all day is because I’d really like to avoid having cat hair in my nethers.

  2. I didn’t realize how much I enjoy being naked until the other day when we were having issues with our heating and we had to leave all of our windows open to try and get some cooler air in. I went to walk around in the buff after my shower and then I was like “Wait! Not so much a good idea.” ha. And it’s interesting to think about the times I feel like I really don’t want to be naked, because that’s usually when I’m feeling icky about my body and I need to examine why.

  3. I spend a lot of time wandering around the house naked when the roommate’s out. Though one time she opened the front door and I JUST made it back to my room, so I haven’t done it lately. But when I get home from school and into my bedroom? The nudity begins and only ends when I have to go out or something. It’s just more comfortable!

  4. I love being naked. I need my naked time, because I do love getting back in touch with my body, in every way possible. New York makes that a little… difficult in winter, unless I’ve got the heat cranked, but I make the time. (Bonus points if Beloved and I are just sitting around in the nude. We each need to recognise our own beauty, and we make sure to remind each other enthusiastically.)

  6. Love this post. On any given day I am naked 80% of the time. I just learned that lots of people consider themselves as home nudists, including Queen Latifah and Kelly Clarkson. I’ve slept nude since I was 10 and find it’s very comfortable. The only thing I don’t do nude is fry chicken and cook bacon!
