To clarify, I’m short. I’m the kind of girl that needs every pair of jeans altered, whether it’s so she doesn’t trip over herself or because she wants to finally be able to wear flats without ruining the hem of her pants.  I’m the kind of girl that wears “ankle length” jeans with heels; the one that hates buying pants and shrugs off the idea of a “knee-length dress” because no dress is every actually knee-length on her.  People think it’s “so cute,” but I’m often irritated by it.

Because of this problem – being five feet tall, that is – finding cropped jeans is hard for me.  Inseams are always too long, and though the alterations department sounds like a good idea, I’ve had many disastrous and time-consuming issues come out of that “solution” to my height “problem.”  Cuffing them is out, too, when you consider that rolling a jean five times over takes away that sleek line and just adds a bunch of bulk at the ankle.  Why can’t designers make a jean – just one – that’s just a little shorter?*

It turns out that someone did.

Hudson Jeans has added a cropped skinny jean to their line, and in the process they chopped five inches off of the inseam.  This means that us short girls can roll up the ends without getting all of that unseemly bulk, and then wear ‘em uncuffed when we want to change it up.  Impressive, right?

Hudson Jeans at Nordstrom.com - and yes, they come in white.

At a mere 27 1/2″ inseam, these jeans might actually work for me.  Check them out in July’s Nylon magazine (which, in my opinion, has a better photo of them) and read their take on styling:

“They can channel both Audrey Hepburn (paired with flats) or Sandra Dee (worn with heels).  [...]  There’s no question that the combination of expert fit with premium denim from Europe and Japan will find favor among Hudson Jeans devotees, which include everyone from the Misshapes to Camilla Belle.”

Personally, I’d dress them up with something silky on top and a pair of patent peep-toe pumps, or wear them to a barbecue with a rolled-sleeve tee and wedges.  Then again, I’m a jeans freak, so I’d probably just wear them everywhere.

You can find these cropped goodies at most department stores, but if you’re lazy, the picture above is from their listing at Nordstrom.com.  (Here’s the listing for the white ones.)  After searching Hudson Jeans’ other items, I’ve found that I like their Gabby cuffed jeans even better…and the inseam on those is only 26″!

*Tall girls!  I know your prblems are even worse – you can remove excess fabric much more easily than add it – so tell me: which jeans run tall sizes that work perfectly on you?  While we’re at it: shorties, give me a shout-out to the best short girl brands out there!*

I have a girl friend (a couple, actually) who boast a 36″ inseam. They SWEAR by Gap’s Long jeans…

I’m a shortie too at 5’3″. I think those extra three inches make my life easier than yours & I have relatively long legs. Short levi’s work just fine for me & my new cheap mossimo’s fit nice too, but I do know the horror of over cuffing & ruined hems.

I’m 4’11 and have been through the same obstacles you have but I find there to be more advantages to being “petite”. Sure some clothes don’t fit exactly perfect, but that can be said for many body types. I can also go to the kids section of the store and find pants that fit just right.. cheaper too. I do find that there are a lot more petite lines coming out, so I don’t feel cheated in any way but I will check out your suggestion.
Also I do go to Old Navy every year and get their cropped business pants. They actually end up being the right length for me, no hemming needed. I do have to say that having a great tailor to take my pants too has been great.

At 5’1 I too have only one pair of trousers that didn’t need to be altered. And they were jeans from the petite range at Dorothy Perkins in the UK.
I loved that so many of their stores had a petites section, though the topshop petite inseam was still always too long.

I’ve got the same problem, needing to alter most of the pant I buy.
But at the same time in most stores in this area I feel that I am one, or all, of the following: not tall enough, not skinny enough, not blond enough.
And I really really don’t like skinny jeans.

Oddly, some of the best jeans I find for my annoyingly long legs, are the cheapest ones available. I paid £7 for a pair last time – the first pair in ages to actually fit!
