For months, Lindsay and I have been fighting against anti-progressive beauty standards – the “perfect” face, the “perfect” body – by asking women to challenge themselves to a day without makeup, upload photos of their “naked faces” to Flickr, posting our own naked faces, and celebrating women that choose to put their real selves out there, sans beauty products.
I’m proud – and a little shocked – to include Jessica Simpson as the newest member of the Naked Face crew.

Photo c/o the Huffington Post
Simpson posed with “air dryed hair and no makeup” for the May issue of Marie Claire, in part to promote her new VH1 show “The Price of Beauty.” While the show holds no interest for me – I don’t need a celebrity to tell me about the horrible practice of skin whitening or worldwide anorexia issues - Simpson’s decision to put her money where her face is impressed me.

Marie Claire insists that Jessica is wearing no makeup in these photos, and that they haven’t been retouched. What do you think?

I’d like to give it the benefit of the doubt but I’m not 100% convinced.

Posted by Poochie | April 12, 2010, 2:19 pmI like to think that Jessica’s not wearing makeup here. I’m a huge TV junkie and think that her show is actually kind of sweetly-spirited and fun. I also think that if it came out that she was wearing makeup and/or airbrushed, it’d be a huge to-do, and she’s trying to come across as more down-to-earth after her recent media catastrophes (the “weight gain,” the John Meyer “sexual napalm” comment, the very public divorce and loss of her money, etc). But then, I’m an idealist.

Posted by Leah Felicity | April 12, 2010, 2:30 pmI think she’s probably telling the truth, (if for no other reason than, as Leah points out, it’d be a big to-do if she was found to not be) but even if she’s not wearing makeup and the photos aren’t retouched, she’s still got an advantage – a professional photographer and flattering lighting! I think that’s what people forget about these photo shoots.

Posted by Michelle | April 12, 2010, 2:39 pmI blogged about this Marie claire cover on Friday!! I get the magazine now from a blog giveaway I won back in December. When I first pulled the magazine out of the mail box I thought the cover looked…more natural than I am used to seeing. I could see her laugh lines, freckle, etc. I believe there was no air brushing. I think there was a LITTLE make-up. I mean even men wear make-up in photo shoots for the lighting and stuff, right?

Posted by Brienna | April 12, 2010, 3:03 pmI unabashedly love Jessica Simpson, though I’m not always a 100% certain why.
But it probably has something to do with the fact that I think that she’s pretty.
And she struggles with her weight, publicly, and can’t keep a boyfriend.
so. very. lovable.

Posted by marzipan | April 12, 2010, 3:49 pmKinda makes me hate her more, if it is true. Because then I’ll know that she’s just that gorgeous WITH ABSOLUTELY NO EFFORT.
So I guess it’s not really “hate” so much as “be incredibly jealous of”

Posted by Jennifer Nicole | April 12, 2010, 7:16 pmno make-up or just a little, she is still making a statement and she would be the least likely candidate that I think would go in that direction, so I commend her and for the first time in her career have a little bit of interest in what she is doing!

Posted by Kristen | April 14, 2010, 8:26 amI was definitely skeptical of the show as well, but I watched it and it was awesome. It isn’t necessarily showing the atrocities that women put themselves through, its more of what other cultures value as beautiful. I watched the one on India, and it was incredibly interesting. They went to a laughing yoga class and went to a “spa”. The spa consisted of using a neti pot and drinking digestive tea which proceeded to make Jessica burp like crazy. It was endearing and fun.
