It’s a well-known fact that The Demoiselles is focused, above all, on maintaining and promoting a positive body image.  But in the wake of fad diets and fat fashion, how do you define “positive body image”?   It’s a source of constant discussion, and during our many (and we mean many) conversations about the best way to present the idea of a positive body image, we kept returning to the same common denominator: health.

Mental health, emotional health, physical health: all three are crucial components of a positive outlook, including positive feelings about your body.  None of us are perfect in all three of these areas, us included.  We’re just two twenty-something women – like many of you – and we certainly don’t know it all.  (Case in point: sometimes we eat an entire box of macaroni and cheese in a sitting. Physical health? Please.)  But we certainly want to know it all…and we definitely don’t want to do it alone.

That’s when we had an idea. It’s something that would not only be a drastic change for The Demoiselles, but perhaps one of the coolest opportunities we’d ever have the ability to facilitate.

What if we got a bunch of girls, in ages ranging from 19 to 26, from 5’0″ to 5’10″, with almost every body type imaginable, all with different health goals…and asked them to document their progress along with us? Well, you’d have the new project we simply call “Getting Healthy“.

These girls, the both of us included, are committed to posting once per week about their goals, their health (mental, physical, emotional), their discoveries and their obstacles in the journey to become healthy.

You can find these posts (to begin next week!) under the “Getting Healthy” tab at the top of the page.  Additionally, because this is such a gigantic operation, we’ve created a new RSS feed specifically for the “Getting Healthy” category, which you can find by clicking here:

logo-200x85

To keep The Demoiselles from getting too cluttered, we’ve decided to keep all Getting Healthy posts off the front page of the site, but if you’re subscribed to the main RSS feed – don’t worry! You’ll still get updates.  So add us to your feed reader! We promise you will not be disappointed.

Starting Monday, you’ll begin seeing introductions from each of the girls: their goals, their struggles, and even *gasp!* full body photos. As you get to know everyone, we encourage you to support, suggest, and interact with us, because we all know how amazing support can feel during a life change. Moreover, we hope that you’ll join us and make your own strides towards health – either privately, or in posts and Flickr photos along with us.

This is a huge life change for each of us, hopefully for the better.  What’s the biggest life change you’ve ever made?

The biggest change we ever made was go vegetarian then vegan. We made the decision on multiple levels but a great side affect has been feeling more peaceful mentally and better physically. There have been some weight changes yes, but the best health benefits have been that I don’t get stomach aches which I used to get quite frequently and, because only animal based foods (meat, diary, eggs) have cholesterol a reduction in those levels as well.

My favorite exercise to do is yoga. It can be a work-out but it also helps me to take time and slow down, which I almost never do. Without yoga I would never just be still unless I’m asleep. I always feel I should be working or reading or writing on the site.

Have fun!

Oooh, going Vegan, I’m sure is an amazing process! I’d ask you to go into detail, but that’s a lot of detail!

Yoga is definitely my most favorite, underused activity. I want to do it all the time, but I NEVER seem to MAKE time for it. That’s definitely about to change. “Without yoga I would never just be still unless I’m asleep.” – That sentence really struck me. You’re so right! It’s SO important to remember that stillness is calm, and calm conquers stress… And maybe, if we were all more comfortable with the idea of “still”, we’d be better off!

Thanks for your thoughts, Miss Poochie!

You know I’m all about this plan, as it’s something I’ve been doing myself! Even small steps make a huge impact.

As a “skinny girl” (5’5″, roughly 110 lbs.) I also face body uncertainty and the need to get healthy. Mine is just a little different than someone wanting to lose weight. I was blessed with great genes, but really that’s all there is to it.
I am the unhealthiest eater I know. I often joke that my insides are probably rotten with how much crap I put inside myself. But recently I have been wanting to eat better and exercise more. My body needs a transformation from the inside out.

I practice (and I can admit it) terrible eating habits. I would rather opt for a candy bar and chewy Sweet-tarts than some fruit. I cave to my cravings and don’t give it a second thought…until later when my acid reflux kicks in and my early signs of IBS give me hell for the next night.

I routinely forget to drink water. I am just never very thirsty. I now have bladder problems (it mimics a UTI without the actual infection) and NEED to drink water, but still forget to.

I’m a working girl who goes to school, but doesn’t have time to exercise. I hate that I now walk up 3 flights of stairs and feel winded. Mandatory gym class in high school really DID do something for my physical health.

And also, I’m beginning to hate my body because of some dreaded cellulite on my butt. I know it’s something that 90% of women have, but it’s just another thing that I want to try and fix.

I applaud you for starting this task. Maybe reading it will help me stay motivated. I just wish for once that people understood “getting healthy” doesn’t just mean losing weight. For all the “skinny girls” out there, it’s just as important to eat right and keep active.

I’d like to reccommend Paul Mckenna’s ‘I can make you thin’.
It’s not just about being ‘thin’ but also about being happy with your body. The comfort eatting section made me cry when I read it the first time, but I feel so much happier since I read the book and listened to the CD.
It’s a really healthy way of going about reaching your ideal weight in a healthy, natural way. :)
I still struggle as I have lots of health problems (and some nasty tablets caused me to put on a lot of weight very quickly), but I’m sure without Paul I could be a lot heavier. So I am happily maintaining my figure, well actually I’ve lost a decent amount and am slowly but steadily losing.

I can’t recommend the system enough. The 90 day success journal helps too. :) There are also books on confidence and such as well if eatting isn’t your specific problem. The confidence book is good but I wouldn’t say to concentrate on more than one at once!

I’ve done every diet and exercise plan under the sun. I will forever be battling with an extra ten pounds and lately I’ve actually started accepting it.

My problem is laziness – if I get in a fitness routine, I can become obsessed but once I fall off, it’s very hard to climb back on. Dieting has always been an easier option for me. Lately I am really paying attention to my body and health and not my weight. I need to address some other issues in my system by means of vitamins, supplements and green foods – this time it’s not about weight loss though that would be nice.

I think what you are doing is a fabulous idea – I would be up for it however I am way t0o subconcious.

I have quit drinking though – just for a month – and already lost 4 pounds this week just from that!
