This website talks a lot about body image: what we look like, how society and the media want us to feel about it, and why we should all ignore that crap and choose to love every curve, angle, blemish and hair on our bodies anyway.
However, because our brains process every small detail, especially when we’re judging those details by the harsh light of fashion magazines ruled by a Photoshop Autocracy, we often get stuck on our body image, and even subsets of our body image. We pick apart our faces – our symmetry, our noses, our jawlines and skin tone – and wonder at the sharpness of our collarbones, the lift of our breasts, even the proportion of our calf muscles.
And, especially as teenagers, we wonder about our vaginas.
Ladies, you know what I mean. Is my mound too hairy? Are my inner labia the right color; are they too big? Is my clitoris normal-looking; do I get wet enough; does it…smell okay?
I don’t know a single girl that, after watching standard pornography for the first time (Playboy, Spice, etc.), didn’t ask herself these questions (along with a hundred more about her breasts, body hair and how the hell one person can stay in that position for so long). I’m surprised I haven’t heard the phrase pussy image before.
Being a curious, anatomy-lovin’ lady with a penchant for sexual freedom and LGBT support, I know a bit about gender reassignment and, therefore, a fair amount about genital plastic surgery. That knowledge led me to learn about labioplasty, vaginaplasty, and a whole host of other genital plastic surgery sometimes performed after childbirth but more often for aesthetic and/or sexual reasons…but I can always learn more.
With that in mind, I went searching and found this YouTube video about “understanding the anatomy of labioplasty.” As I watched, with Lindsay sitting next to me, typing away, I…wait, what?
“We [...] sometimes perform liposuction on [the mons pubis] if it is too full.”
Okay, I’ve heard of a lot of ridiculous-sounding plastic surgeries, but seriously? “‘Scuse me, guys, but my vaginal area is just too full. BRB.” What?!
Other than that, the video – and all the other genital plastic surgery info I’ve found on the ‘net – didn’t surprise me. Mostly, it’s all about making things bigger or smaller: bigger outer labia, smaller inner labia, modified clitoral hood. Because looks are everything when someone’s about to give you an orgasm.
…well, okay, maybe in porn they are.
My point is this: the media didn’t stop at telling us how wide our hips and noses should be. More and more women in the porn industry are going beyond waxing and douching: they’re getting plastic surgery on their pussies. This means that, according to the mainstream media, not only do you have to make sure your lips look perfect with Botox and gloss, but your other lips need to look perfect, too – care of some hot wax and a scalpel.

Pornography makes me so unbelievably self-conscious. I have a fearful sexual past, full of abuse and the like, so I’m already prone to be afraid of a man’s touch. Porn just reinforces my idea that I’m not sexy enough, I’m not worthy of being satisfied, and that I need to change everything about my body before anyone sees it.

I get off on watching. It pisses me off that the content is so dominated by fake boobs and shaved mounds but if you reject that stuff you actually get a far better representation of the female body in porn than in your average fashion mag. God love ‘em, there are men and women out there that love fat women, thin women, big breasts, little breasts…and there’s porn for all of them.
I really dislike the feminist position that all porn is bad and I think the writings of Dworkin, positing all penetrative sex as being anti-women, do all women a disservice. There is immense power to be gained from taking pleasure in your own body. When you get to know your body through sexual pleasure, it’s so much easier to shake off all the negatives about your body. So what if I’m a bit overweight, I’ve got wrinkles and cellulite? So what if heads don’t turn when I walk down the street? The more women can embrace the beauty and power of their own body, the better we’ll all feel about ourselves.

Thank you for this blog!
I was very curious about this topic after realizing that so many photos displayed women with (virtually) identical looking pussies.
Especially as I have always found them as unique as the women to whom they belong.
I had heard rumors that this sort of plastic surgery was being performed for cosmetic reasons and was a bit puzzled because, in all their diversity, they always looked great to me!
